Fiji is set to collaborate with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to create a National Labour Mobility Framework and Strategy. During a recent parliamentary session, Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh emphasized the government’s memorandum of understanding with the IOM aimed at formulating this national strategy, which is designed to safeguard Fijians seeking employment abroad.
Mr. Singh outlined that the proposed policy will define key priority approaches for governing both incoming and outgoing labour mobility. “The policy will ensure that Fiji develops a well-structured labour mobility governance framework that maximizes the socio-economic benefits of migration for individuals and communities while adhering to international standards and best practices,” he stated.
The Minister noted that the signing of this memorandum underscores the government’s dedication to working collaboratively to tackle labour mobility challenges and transform them into opportunities. He also mentioned that this partnership will facilitate access to technical support from the IOM to protect migrant worker rights, conduct research, and improve capability in collecting labour migration data.
Funding for this initiative will be drawn from the Migration Partnership Trust Fund. Additionally, Mr. Singh indicated that the project will involve gathering a country needs assessment and compiling labour mobility data.
