The Fiji National Security and Defence Review (NSDR) has been introduced as a strategic framework to help the nation address the various intricate challenges that jeopardize its sovereignty and stability. During the NSDR launch at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua highlighted that the modern security landscape is confronted with issues such as cyber threats, climate change, transnational crime, and geopolitical tensions.
Tikoduadua emphasized the need for Fiji to adopt an agile and proactive approach in tackling these challenges. He pointed out that a key aspect of this review is the promotion of a comprehensive strategy involving both the government and society in addressing security needs. According to him, while the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police Force hold essential roles, their efforts must be complemented by collaboration with other government entities, civil society, and the private sector.
He noted that national security is a collective obligation that involves everyone, rather than falling solely under the purview of a single organization.
The Editorial Board that contributed their expertise to the review includes Professor Satish Chand as Chair, Associate Professor Shailendra Singh, Assistant Professor Ana Rokomokoti, and NSDR Independent lead Jim Sanday. Additionally, consultations with communities will ensure that primary data for the NSDR is gathered through collaboration between the government and civil society.
