Fiji’s dedication to scientific research and environmental stewardship has taken a significant step forward with the launch of the modern research vessel, ‘Yau Dikevi’, in Lami on Thursday. This advanced vessel represents a major investment aimed at enhancing oceanic research and safeguarding the nation’s marine resources.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who officiated the vessel’s commissioning, emphasized its capability, stating that it is equipped with cutting-edge scientific survey tools. He described the ‘Yau Dikevi’ as not only serving as a floating laboratory but also as a symbol of hope for the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources.
Rabuka remarked on the vessel’s potential, saying, “Although its size may not be impressive, it is loaded with state-of-the-art equipment essential for our needs.” It will enable scientists to conduct various marine studies, including marine geology, coastal surveys, ocean floor mapping, and monitoring of vulnerable coastal communities affected by climate change. Furthermore, the vessel aims to explore tectonic activities and gain insights into underwater processes, thereby enriching global scientific knowledge while preserving Fiji’s marine ecology for future generations.
In addition to contributing to national research, the vessel also holds potential benefits for the wider region. The completion of this project was made possible through a partnership between the government and the local shipping industry, particularly with the involvement of Silverstone Pte Ltd.
The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the staff and management of the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources for their dedicated efforts in making this vessel a reality. He concluded with a hopeful message for the future: “May the research vessel navigate the ocean with purpose, safety, and success, bringing discoveries, fostering collaboration, and strengthening our resolve to be better stewards of our marine environment.” Following the commissioning ceremony, the RV Yau Dikevi set off on its inaugural journey to Nukulau.
This initiative not only highlights Fiji’s commitment to scientific advancement but also fosters a spirit of collaboration aimed at preserving our planet’s precious marine ecosystems.
