Fiji is taking significant steps to enhance dental health among its youth and communities, as underscored during the recent World Oral Health Day festivities in Suva. The initiative encourages parents and local communities to develop daily oral hygiene routines in children, which is essential for cultivating long-term dental health across the nation.
Jyotika Devi, marketing manager for Colgate-Palmolive in Fiji and the Pacific, highlighted the importance of early education in oral health during the celebrations. She remarked, “Starting oral health education at a younger age increases the likelihood of a healthier future.” This necessity arises from the high incidence of dental health issues reported by the Ministry of Health, which emphasizes the critical need for extensive community outreach.
In collaboration with Fiji National University (FNU), activities at Dudley Intermediate School in Toorak included a variety of interactive programs aimed at teaching children the importance of dental hygiene. The theme for this year’s celebrations, “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Mind,” reinforces the vital connection between oral health and overall well-being. Dr. Osea Dukuno, head of FNU’s School of Dentistry and Oral Health, stressed the crucial role of these programs in improving educational outreach about dental care.
Colgate-Palmolive is committed to deepening its educational initiatives, building on past successful efforts such as National Tooth Brushing Day, which encouraged widespread involvement. This growing emphasis on dental care and proper oral hygiene practices presents a consistent push for better health standards in Fiji.
The ongoing collaboration between Colgate and various educational and health institutions reflects a united dedication to improving dental health. By instilling healthy habits in children now, communities can look forward to a brighter and healthier future. This initiative offers a promising perspective on how focused educational efforts and community participation can significantly enhance dental health practices, ultimately benefiting future generations with greater access to quality dental care and vital knowledge.
