Fiji’s New Presidential Nominee Sparks Curiosity

The Fijian government has nominated Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, Na Turaga na Tui Cakau, for the position of Head of State and President of Fiji. This decision follows the formal withdrawal of the current President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, from the Prime Minister’s nomination for a second term.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced the nomination shortly after midnight, stating that he had consulted the Parliamentary Caucus of the People’s Alliance, which has formally endorsed Ratu Naiqama for the presidency. Rabuka mentioned that Ratu Naiqama has accepted the nomination.

As Prime Minister, Rabuka plans to formally present Ratu Naiqama’s nomination during a special parliamentary session scheduled for next Thursday, in accordance with section 84(2) of the Fijian Constitution.

On October 17, 2024, Rabuka had previously written to Ratu Wiliame seeking his consent to be nominated for another term. However, on October 21, he received official notification from Ratu Wiliame withdrawing his name from consideration for re-election.

The Prime Minister expressed appreciation for Ratu Wiliame’s term as President, highlighting his integrity and the smooth governmental transition following the December 2022 general election. A traditional ceremony will be held to honor Ratu Wiliame at the conclusion of his presidency.

Rabuka called on all Fijians to unite with him and the Coalition Government to foster social cohesion, peace, unity, stability, and prosperity within the nation.
