Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has been appointed as the new President of the Republic of Fiji Islands. His appointment followed a vote in Parliament, in which he was nominated by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. The Opposition Leader, Inia Seruiratu, nominated Ratu Meli Tora Tavaiqia for the position. In the final tally, Ratu Naiqama secured 37 votes, while Ratu Meli received 16 votes. Ratu Naiqama is set to be officially sworn into office on November 12, 2024.
