Fiji’s newly appointed Police Commissioner, Rusiate Tudravu, has outlined his expectations for the police force following a meeting with senior officers on his first day in office. Emphasizing the need for internal order, Tudravu stressed, “I want a clean slate within this organisation; we start from within because I firmly believe that if everything is in order within, automatically our service outside will come.”
Tudravu, who will officially assume the position on February 3, 2025, has made it clear that upholding the law and maintaining transparency will be a priority. “I want things to be done so that people cannot point at us as law enforcers when we are the ones breaking the law,” he stated, indicating a commitment to ethical conduct within the agency.
His predecessor, retired Police Chief Juki Fong Chew, expressed confidence in Tudravu’s capabilities, noting the significance of having an officer transition into the role from within the police force itself. “A police officer handing over to a police officer is an achievement in itself; we are united in our goals,” Chew remarked.
Tudravu also indicated his intention to engage with the government about addressing personnel vacancies and enhancing the overall functioning of the police force. His proactive approach and fresh leadership could foster substantial improvements in police-community relations, a critical need given the previous challenges facing the organization.
This leadership transition comes at a pivotal moment as Fiji looks to restore public trust in law enforcement. With a strong focus on internal integrity and external engagement, Tudravu’s plans present a hopeful outlook for the future of policing in Fiji. His commitment to building trust and fostering a culture of accountability may well lead to a more effective police force, dedicated to serving the community.
