The Ministry of Trade in Fiji has unveiled a detailed plan aimed at empowering and connecting with the Fijian diaspora living abroad, particularly focusing on increasing savings and investment opportunities. Minister Manoa Kamikamica expressed that the positive response to the recent USA-Fiji Investment and Savings initiative has highlighted the need for a more structured engagement strategy with Fijians overseas.

The Minister emphasized that investments and savings from the diaspora contribute significantly to Fiji’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), aiding in business development, job creation, and infrastructure improvements. He highlighted the importance of engaging the diaspora, not just for financial input but also for the wealth of knowledge and skills they bring, which can foster innovation and development back home.

To enhance this engagement, the ministry is committed to making the USA-Fiji Investment and Savings drive an annual event, coinciding with the Fiji Day celebrations to maximize participation. Plans are in place to expand these initiatives to other countries in the future, addressing any barriers to investment opportunities and forging partnerships, including collaboration with HFC Bank.

Mr. Kamikamica is also crafting a targeted policy for the diaspora, aimed at attracting further investments and boosting the overall well-being of Fijians. This approach envisions a future where every Fijian, regardless of their location, can actively contribute to the nation’s success.

In summary, this strategy represents a proactive approach by the Fijian government to cultivate relationships with citizens abroad, ensuring that they feel valued and invested in their homeland’s economic future. By recognizing the diaspora’s potential, Fiji is positioning itself for a more inclusive and robust economic growth. This is a hopeful step forward, as it combines financial engagement with emotional ties, promoting a sense of belonging and community among Fijians worldwide.
