Fiji’s New Musical Legacy: Chapter 5 Takes the Stage

Spread the love

The music scene in Fiji has been enriched over the years by a diverse array of talent in singing, songwriting, and instrumental performance. Attending live concerts often fills attendees with intense emotions, driven by the magnetic combination of engaging music, collective experiences, and joy shared with artists.

An exemplary event showcasing this vibrant spirit was the 2024 Reggae Music Festival held at Bidesi Ground last month, where a dynamic group of cousins and siblings, known as Chapter 5 (C5), captivated the audience with their reggae performances. Comprising Nicholas Smith on drums, Michael Yalani as lead guitarist, and Niko Yalani on rhythm guitar, the group later expanded with the addition of bassist Filipe Yalani, and vocalists Maya and Niu Smith.

Drawing inspiration from their family’s rich musical lineage, Drummer Nicholas explained that C5 is named in honor of their heritage, being the fifth generation to cultivate a passion for music since their ancestors settled in Fiji from Wallis and Futuna. Music has been a cornerstone for their family, with Nicholas pointing out how their uncle, the late Arthur Philitoga, etched their family name into the music industry through his significant contributions. Philitoga’s legacy dates back over three decades and was marked by the formation of his band, Kulture, which began as a solo act.

The band faces the dual challenge and inspiration of living up to their uncle’s legacy. Nicholas articulated that while the pressure is immense, their familial bond aids in navigating challenges. Jamming together has fostered their growth, with shared experiences turning into performance opportunities; they often receive weekly gig invitations in addition to regular performances at Mana Coffee on Selbourne St in Suva.

This passionate group, all aged 25 and under, understands the complexities of blending personal and professional relationships. Nicholas noted the significance of open communication among them, which helps overcome challenges and strengthen their collaboration. They draw inspiration not only from their family but also from local artists such as Olsen J Sefo and Myles Manulevu.

The group’s introduction to their idol Olsen J Sefo through an uncle was pivotal, leading to their first gig after a traditional yaqona session. In just over a year since forming, C5 has garnered positive feedback from audiences, and with their family’s ongoing support, they are poised for future success in the music arena.

In summary, Chapter 5 stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of musical talent within families. Their journey emphasizes the importance of nurturing creative passion, the joy of collaboration, and the impact of familial support in leaving a lasting mark on the Fijian music industry. With their infectious enthusiasm and commitment, C5 embodies hope for the future generation of musicians in Fiji.
