Fiji’s judicial system celebrated the inauguration of the $29 million Ba Court complex today, marking a significant achievement in decentralizing legal services throughout the nation. The state-of-the-art facility is designed to enhance access to justice for citizens, a commitment emphasized by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during the opening ceremony.
Rabuka underscored the government’s dedication to promoting fundamental human rights, individual freedoms, and a strong adherence to the rule of law. He stated that every citizen has the right to seek justice under the law, highlighting the importance of the new Ba facility, which is expected to alleviate some of the workload from the existing court system and eliminate the need for residents to travel to Lautoka for High Court matters.
The new Ba High Court will handle appeals from the Central Agricultural Tribunal, as well as civil, criminal, and family court cases, benefiting not only the people of Ba but also those from surrounding regions including Ra, Tavua, Bukuya, Magodro, and Nadarivatu.
Prime Minister Rabuka praised the Acting Chief Justice, Honorable Justice Salesi Temo, for his leadership and vision in establishing this much-needed facility. He concluded his remarks by recognizing the judiciary for its ongoing efforts to improve the delivery of justice and called on the community to work together towards sustainable development, aiming for a prosperous Fiji for future generations.
This ceremony signals a hopeful commitment to strengthening the judicial framework in Fiji, ensuring that access to justice is more equitable and closer to the communities that need it the most. It represents a positive step forward in building a judicial system that is both accessible and responsive to the needs of the people.
