Fiji’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea (PNG), Mr. Jackson Bernard Nato Evans, received a warm welcome over the weekend at the Fiji High Commission Chancery in Port Moresby. The ceremony, organized by the Fijian diaspora community, celebrated his new diplomatic role with traditional rites.

In his inaugural address, High Commissioner Evans expressed his gratitude for the community’s hospitality and underscored his commitment to enhancing the bilateral relations between Fiji and PNG. He also outlined his responsibilities, which extend to representing Fiji in neighboring Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands.

Evans highlighted the crucial role that cultural and social ties play in connecting Fiji and the broader Pacific region, often referred to as the Pacific Vuvale. He took a moment to honor the memory of his predecessor, the late Mosese Tikoitoga, who passed away in December 2023, and thanked the dedicated staff at the Fiji High Commission for their ongoing support.

The Fiji High Commission in PNG is pivotal in advancing the nation’s foreign policy, especially concerning regional peace and cooperation. The recent reopening of the Fiji High Commission in PNG in 2023 demonstrates the Coalition Government’s dedication to strengthening diplomatic ties and ensuring regional stability.

As Fiji’s ninth High Commissioner to PNG, Evans is accompanied by his wife, Madam Lynette Evans, and their daughter, Nicolette Evans. Economic links between Fiji and PNG are on the rise, with significant investments from Fijian companies like Vodafone, Jacks, and Prouds fostering trade relationships.

Evans expressed optimism regarding the future collaboration between the two nations, reinforcing the importance of their diplomatic relationship, which has existed since 1975. He conveyed hope that this partnership will result in mutual growth and prosperity, emphasizing a positive outlook for enhanced cooperation in various sectors.

In summary, High Commissioner Evans’ appointment marks a significant opportunity for both Fiji and PNG to strengthen their ties further, positively impacting diplomatic relations in the Pacific region.
