The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation of Fiji has announced the launch of its Pilot Tourism Micro and Small Enterprise Fund, seeking expressions of interest from the public for funding aimed at supporting local enterprises within the tourism sector. With a significant allocation of $400,000 from the national budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025, this initiative marks a pioneering effort by the ministry to empower micro and small businesses.

The fund is designed to assist micro-businesses with grants of up to $15,000 and small businesses with grants of up to $25,000. Eligible applicants must be Fijian citizens aged 18 and older, own a business registered for at least two years, and demonstrate that more than 51% of their business is locally owned and derives a significant portion of revenue from the tourism industry. Additionally, applicants are required to cover one-third of the project’s total cost.

As highlighted in the ministry’s statement, this initiative aims to directly support businesses that form the backbone of Fiji’s tourism sector, including family-run guesthouses, cultural activity providers, and local tour operators. By addressing financial access challenges, the fund is anticipated to enhance the quality and diversity of tourism offerings, catering to the growing demand for engaging and immersive local experiences. This aligns with national strategies like the Na Vualiku Tourism Development Program and the Farm to Fork Initiative, designed to create a robust support network for entrepreneurs and communities.

Applications for the fund opened on December 4, 2024, and will be accepted until February 28, 2025. This initiative offers a promising avenue for local entrepreneurs to thrive by enhancing their services and contributing meaningfully to Fiji’s tourism ecosystem.

In summary, the Pilot Tourism Micro and Small Enterprise Fund is an important step that not only aims to uplift local businesses but also strengthen Fiji’s overall tourism industry, offering a hopeful outlook for the economic development of the region. With proper support and investment, local enterprises can significantly enhance their contributions to both the economy and community well-being.
