Fiji’s New Foreign Policy: A Step Towards Closer Ties with Spain

Fiji has launched its first Foreign Policy White Paper, focusing on the enhancement of development assistance through improved multilateral and bilateral relations with both Pacific and international partners. This initiative was highlighted by Lenora Qereqeretabua, the Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, during a farewell meeting with Gaël Sánchez Cano, the Chargé d’affaires at the Embassy of Spain in Fiji, who is completing his diplomatic service.

Qereqeretabua emphasized Fiji’s commitments outlined in the Foreign Policy White Paper, as well as the “Ocean of Peace” concept championed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Additionally, she reiterated Fiji’s dedication to collaborating with development partners across the Pacific for shared economic prosperity, peace, security, and sustainable development.

During the meeting, Qereqeretabua expressed her openness to discussions aimed at enhancing cooperation on issues of mutual interest between Fiji and Spain. She also thanked Cano for his service to Fiji and conveyed her best wishes for his future endeavors.

Cano praised Prime Minister Rabuka for the Ocean of Peace idea and reaffirmed Spain’s support for this initiative. He recognized the significance of Fiji’s Foreign Policy White Paper, highlighting the importance of having a clear direction to advance common priorities and goals.
