Fiji’s New FICAC Chief Responds to Political Criticism

Fiji’s first female FICAC Commissioner, Barbara Malimali, has addressed concerns regarding her appointment, asserting that she is not a political appointee. Her appointment was made by President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere based on the recommendation of the Judicial Services Commission.

“People can say what they want about my appointment,” Malimali stated, emphasizing that the Judicial Services Commission recognized her as the best candidate for the position. She expressed offense at accusations of being a political appointee and criticized those questioning the decision of Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo, whom she described as a respected figure in the judiciary.

Malimali stated she anticipated criticism, acknowledging that it is part of the role. “If you can’t take the critics, then don’t take the job,” she remarked.

As she steps into her new role, Malimali is currently in the process of getting acquainted with FICAC’s operations. She highlighted the organization’s size and complexity, stating, “I am still getting to know all the different departments and people that I will be working with” and is focusing on organizing herself amidst external challenges.

Following her appointment announcement last Thursday, Malimali faced significant scrutiny, particularly in light of the simultaneous resignation of former FICAC acting deputy commissioner Francis Puleiwai.
