The Maritime Safety and Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has announced that the MV Captain Inoke, a recently acquired Fast Ferry by Goundar Shipping Limited, has not yet completed the necessary surveys and registrations. As it stands, the ferry, which arrived at Suva Port under a Mongolian flag, is classified as a foreign vessel.

MSAF’s CEO, Joweli Cawaki, explained that until the vessel is properly registered with the authority, it will remain unable to operate within local waters. He indicated that registration is anticipated to occur next week, pending an application from Goundar Shipping Limited.

George Goundar, the managing director of Goundar Shipping, acknowledged the current registration status of the ferry. However, he stressed that the vessel is owned by a Fijian national and explained that the temporary registration under the Mongolian flag was due to political circumstances in Korea, the vessel’s original location. Goundar emphasized the need for upgrades and maintenance on the ferry, which he purchased for over $7 million. He also expressed his commitment to serving the Fijian people amidst criticism from rival companies.

This situation highlights the complexities involved in maritime regulations and the dedication of local business owners to enhance transport services in Fiji. The anticipation surrounding MV Captain Inoke’s registration and operational launch reflects a hopeful step towards improving inter-island connectivity and empowering local commerce. As the authorities progress with the necessary approvals, the potential for enhanced maritime operations remains a promising prospect for the region.

In summary, the MV Captain Inoke’s journey to becoming a locally operational ferry is underway, showcasing the resilience of local entrepreneurs and the importance of navigating regulatory processes for the benefit of the community.
