The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has announced that the new Fast Ferry, MV Captain Inoke, operated by Goundar Shipping Limited, has not yet been surveyed and approved by the authority. Currently, this vessel remains classified as a foreign vessel as it arrived in Fiji under a Mongolian flag.

The ferry reached Fiji early on Friday, docking at Suva Port at approximately 1 PM. MSAF’s CEO, Joweli Cawaki, confirmed that the vessel will not be permitted to operate until it is registered with the authority, which is anticipated to occur next week.

Cawaki highlighted the importance of this registration for the vessel to be allowed to move within local waters, stating that Goundar Shipping is expected to submit an application soon. Mr. George Goundar, the managing director of Goundar Shipping, acknowledged that while the MV Captain Inoke is currently registered as foreign, it is owned by a Fijian businessman. Due to political challenges in Korea, the vessel was brought under a Mongolian flag for its transport to Fiji.

Goundar indicated that minor issues arose upon arrival when other departments at the port hesitated to accept the vessel. He expressed his commitment to the maritime service in Fiji, emphasizing his intention to serve the local community despite facing negative sentiments from competing companies.

He invested over $7 million in this ferry, with another vessel expected later this year costing approximately $3 million. Goundar called for unity and focus on service rather than political disputes, urging that the people should have the power to choose their services.

In summary, the MV Captain Inoke awaits registration which will enable it to operate in Fijian waters. Goundar has invested significantly to improve maritime services in the country, and despite the hurdles, he remains focused on serving the people of Fiji.

This situation offers a glimpse of potential growth in Fiji’s maritime industry, with new vessels promising to enhance services for local communities. It reflects a resilient spirit as local businesses strive to overcome challenges in pursuit of progress.
