Fiji’s New Ferry: Caught in Registration Limbo

The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has announced that Goundar Shipping Limited’s new Fast Ferry, MV Captain Inoke, has yet to undergo the required survey and approval process. As a result, the vessel will remain classified as a foreign ship until these steps are completed.

The MV Captain Inoke arrived in Fiji early Friday morning, flying a Mongolian flag, and is scheduled to dock at Suva Port at 1 pm. MSAF’s Chief Executive Officer, Joweli Cawaki, confirmed that the vessel is still under foreign registration but can be registered locally once Goundar Shipping submits the necessary application. Mr. Cawaki noted that the ferry would be unable to operate until it is fully registered, which is expected to happen next week.

George Goundar, managing director of Goundar Shipping, acknowledged the current foreign registration but emphasized that the vessel is owned by a Fijian businessman. He explained that due to political issues in Korea, the ferry had to come under a Mongolian flag. Mr. Goundar expressed frustration over initial resistance from various departments to accept the vessel and highlighted that he is fully committed to maintaining and servicing Fiji’s needs.

He revealed that the MV Captain Inoke represents a significant investment of over $7 million, with plans for another vessel expected to arrive in mid-year costing an additional $3 million. Mr. Goundar expressed determination to move past rivalries and political distractions, stating his focus is on serving the Fijian people and providing them with quality maritime transport.

This situation illustrates the complexities of maritime regulations and the challenges faced by local businesses navigating international shipping rules. With the proper registration completed, the MV Captain Inoke has the potential to enhance Fiji’s maritime transportation capabilities, contributing positively to local tourism and commerce.

In summary, Goundar Shipping is on track to secure the necessary approvals for the MV Captain Inoke, which is a promising development for Fiji’s shipping industry and local economy. The commitment from local business leaders like Mr. Goundar reflects a hopeful future for the industry as they aim to overcome initial hurdles and serve the community effectively.
