The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has announced that Goundar Shipping Limited’s newly acquired fast ferry, MV Captain Inoke, is currently classified as a foreign vessel and has not yet undergone the necessary surveys for registration. The ferry arrived in Fiji under a Mongolian flag at approximately 6 am on Friday and was anticipated to dock at Suva Port around 1 pm.
According to MSAF CEO Joweli Cawaki, the vessel remains registered as a foreign entity, and it cannot operate until it has officially registered with the authority. This registration process is expected to commence next week. Cawaki noted that Goundar Shipping is in communication with MSAF, and an application for registration from the company is anticipated soon.
George Goundar, the managing director of Goundar Shipping, confirmed that while the ferry is currently registered as a foreign vessel, he is the registered owner under Fijian law. He explained that the ferry was brought under the Mongolian flag due to political circumstances in Korea, where the vessel was initially surveyed.
Goundar also mentioned that minor setbacks occurred when the Ports and other departments delayed accepting the vessel, despite his local ownership. He emphasized his commitment to serving the Fijian people and stated that the ferry represents a significant investment of over $7 million. Goundar is optimistic about upgrading the ferry during its maintenance period, which he expects will take one to two months.
In response to criticisms from rival companies, Goundar urged a focus on service rather than politics, advocating for the public’s right to choose their service providers.
This development highlights the ongoing efforts to enhance Fiji’s maritime capabilities with modern vessels that hold the potential to improve transportation and tourism in the region. The eventual registration and operation of MV Captain Inoke can provide a significant boost to the local economy once the necessary regulatory approvals are finalized.
