The Maritime Safety and Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has announced that the new Fast Ferry, MV Captain Inoke, owned by Goundar Shipping Limited, has not yet been surveyed and registered by the authority. As a result, it remains classified as a foreign vessel. The MV Captain Inoke arrived in Fiji early Friday morning, flying a Mongolian flag, and was anticipated to dock at Suva Port later that day.

Joweli Cawaki, the CEO of MSAF, commented that the vessel is still under foreign registration, which prevents it from operating until it receives the necessary local registration. Mr. Cawaki noted that Goundar Shipping is expected to submit an application for registration next week, which will allow them to proceed with operations.

George Goundar, the managing director of Goundar Shipping Limited, acknowledged the current classification of the vessel but emphasized that it is owned by a registered Fijian businessman. He explained that due to political issues in Korea, the vessel was brought to Fiji under a different flag for transit. Goundar also mentioned some initial resistance from port authorities regarding the acceptance of the vessel but reiterated his commitment to serving the Fijian community.

He expressed pride in his investment of over $7 million into the new vessel and cited plans for maintenance and upgrades over the next couple of months. Despite facing challenges, including negative remarks from rival companies, Goundar remains focused on his goal of providing good service to the people of Fiji.

This situation reflects the complexities involved in maritime regulations and the importance of proper vessel registration for operational safety. As Goundar Shipping works through this process, the hope is that the MV Captain Inoke will soon become a valuable addition to Fiji’s maritime transport services, contributing positively to the local economy and tourism sector.
