The Maritime Safety and Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has announced that the MV Captain Inoke, a new fast ferry owned by Goundar Shipping Limited, is still awaiting survey and registration by the authority. As a result, the vessel is currently classified as a foreign ship, having arrived in Fiji flying a Mongolian flag.
The ferry docked in Fiji at around 6 am on Friday and was due to arrive at Suva Port by 1 pm. Joweli Cawaki, the CEO of MSAF, emphasized that without registration, the ferry would not be allowed to operate. He mentioned that Goundar Shipping’s managing director, George Goundar, is expected to submit the necessary application for registration next week.
Mr. Goundar clarified that although the ferry is currently registered under the Fiji Revenue Customs Authority as a foreign vessel, it is owned by a registered Fijian businessman. He explained that due to political issues in Korea, the ferry was brought to Fiji under a different flag. Goundar mentioned initial obstacles faced at the port but remains committed to overcoming them, asserting his dedication to serving the Fijian community.
The ferry is said to have cost over $7 million, with another vessel expected to arrive in Fiji by mid-year at a price of approximately $3 million. Goundar expressed determination in proceeding with the necessary upgrades and maintenance to ensure the ferry is operational soon.
In light of this situation, this development presents an opportunity for Goundar Shipping Limited to expand its fleet and enhance maritime services in Fiji. The arrival of the MV Captain Inoke marks a significant investment that could improve transportation options and contribute positively to the local economy. It is essential for all stakeholders to work collaboratively to facilitate the swift registration of the vessel, ensuring it can serve the people of Fiji without delay.
In summary, while there are bureaucratic hurdles to overcome, the commitment to improve maritime services in Fiji through investments like the MV Captain Inoke is a positive sign of growth for the industry.
