Fiji’s New Era: Unity and Democracy Ahead Under Rabuka and Prasad

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad expressed his deep honor in collaborating with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to lead Fiji into a new era of unity, dialogue, and mutual respect. His remarks came during the Fiji Day celebrations held in Washington D.C., which marked the 55th anniversary of Fiji’s independence.

During the celebrations, Professor Prasad paid homage to the nation’s founding leaders — Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, A.D. Patel, and S.M. Koya — for their vision and courage in guiding Fiji towards self-government in 1970. Commenting on this legacy, he stated, “As the leader of the National Federation Party, I am proud to stand on the shoulders of those visionary leaders who helped shape our nation’s destiny.”

He also commemorated the contributions of the late Justice Jai Ram Reddy, noting his collaboration with Mr. Rabuka in developing the 1997 Constitution, which he described as a significant achievement in fostering reconciliation and inclusion. He proudly affirmed, “Today, I am deeply honoured to work alongside Prime Minister Rabuka. Together, we are committed to a new political era defined by freedom, unity, dialogue, and mutual respect.”

Professor Prasad outlined the government’s ongoing efforts to restore democracy, repeal restrictive media laws, and enhance freedom of expression. He presented an encouraging economic update, noting that Fiji’s debt-to-GDP ratio has been reduced from 90% to 77% over the past two and a half years.

In his call to action for all Fijians, he urged them to uphold the spirit of independence by promoting dignity, equality, and opportunity. “Our unity is our strength—and together, we will build a brighter, more prosperous Fiji,” he proclaimed, voicing a hopeful vision for the future of the nation.

This message reflects the government’s commitment to not only restore freedom and democracy but also to improve the overall well-being of its citizens, ensuring that Fiji continues to progress towards a more equitable society.
