The National Coordinating Committee has been reestablished to lead the creation of the newly formed Department of Children in Fiji, following the enactment of the Child Justice Act and the Child Care and Protection Act. These pieces of legislation are designed to improve the welfare and protection of children throughout the nation.
Minister for Women and Children, Sashi Kiran, highlighted the importance of these laws, describing them as the beginning of a new era for child protection in Fiji. “These laws represent a new chapter for the children of Fiji, a chapter that will see them protected, supported, and given the chance to thrive in a safer, more nurturing society,” stated Ms. Kiran.
The ministry is actively working to transform these legal frameworks into practical initiatives, coordinating with other government agencies to secure necessary funding and implement relevant policy changes. The revival of the National Coordinating Committee plays an essential role in this effort, focusing on creating a National Action Plan aimed at preventing all forms of child abuse.
In collaboration with UNICEF, the ministry also aims to enhance community support systems, including training community counselors to assist children who have experienced abuse. Ms. Kiran emphasized the need for holistic interventions, recognizing that trauma can be intergenerational and that parental support is crucial. Plans are underway for the introduction of a parenting app to provide parents with access to effective parenting strategies.
Despite the serious nature of child abuse in Fiji, recent reports indicate a decrease in such cases from 2022 to 2023, although the statistics remain troubling. The government’s renewed commitment to child protection is evident in its proactive response to these challenges.
The initiatives being implemented by the Ministry of Women and Children offer a promising outlook. By collaborating with various stakeholders and focusing on preventive education and community involvement, there’s a concerted effort to create a safer environment for children in Fiji. This renewed commitment ensures a future where children are recognized as valuable members of society deserving of protection and support. The forward-thinking approach aims at fostering positive, enduring changes in the lives of Fiji’s children, contributing to a nurturing atmosphere conducive to their growth and well-being.
