The Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has initiated nationwide public awareness sessions to enhance understanding of the recent changes to electricity tariffs. This initiative aims to provide consumers with a platform to raise concerns regarding the tariff revision and to comprehend its financial implications, particularly in relation to their individual electricity bills.
Fiji Electricity Authority (EFL) Chief Executive Fatiaki Gibson, who participated in the awareness sessions in Nadi, emphasized the collaborative nature of these events, noting that EFL is working alongside the FCCC to address public inquiries. Gibson pointed out that the presence of EFL representatives is essential to clarify the technical aspects of how the tariff changes will impact customers’ bills.
The sessions are primarily aimed at domestic customers, allowing them to seek clarity on the revisions. Gibson assured attendees that the tariff increase has been designed with a focus on safeguarding vulnerable communities. He remarked, “From the EFL’s perspective, we’ve been very conscious right from board management regarding this tariff revision. We need to look after vulnerable people and communities, particularly small and medium enterprises in the commercial category.”
Moreover, Gibson highlighted that the tariff increase would not significantly affect domestic users, especially those with lower electricity usage. However, there is noticeable skepticism among the public. Residents and businesses in the Nadi area have voiced concerns that an increase in tariffs could trigger a rise in the costs of other goods and services, ultimately impacting all consumers.
The public awareness program concluded its nationwide sessions today but is set to hold another session from December 29th to 30th, offering additional opportunities for community engagement and clarity regarding the tariff changes. This initiative reflects the ongoing commitment to transparency and consumer education in the face of evolving market conditions.
