Fiji’s New Consumer Advocate: A Promising Future Ahead!

The newly appointed CEO of the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), Ms. Jiuta, aims to maintain high standards in consumer protection, fair trading, economic sustainability, and social responsibility. Expressing her enthusiasm about returning to the FCCC, Ms. Jiuta emphasized the importance of her role in balancing consumer rights with the needs of a competitive marketplace, which is vital for Fiji’s economic health.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, has voiced strong support for Ms. Jiuta’s appointment, highlighting her expertise as essential for navigating the evolving challenges in consumer protection and market competition. He lauded her capabilities in driving positive changes for the benefit of all Fijians.

Before her current role, Ms. Jiuta had extensive experience in the FCCC, having served in multiple leadership capacities including Manager of Legal, Risk Management, and Governance, as well as General Manager of Operations. Her background also includes previous work as a Resident Magistrate, allowing her to bring a wealth of legal knowledge to her new position.

This leadership transition follows the recent appointment of Cecil Browne as the chairman of the FCCC, who is also expected to enhance the organization’s focus on consumer advocacy and competition regulation. Together, both leaders are anticipated to forge a positive path forward for the FCCC, addressing the needs of consumers in light of challenges such as the rising cost of living.

The collaborative efforts between Ms. Jiuta and Chairman Browne signal a hopeful outlook for development in consumer rights and economic integrity in Fiji, reflecting the committee’s commitment to foster a fair and competitive market environment.

With Ms. Jiuta’s experience and dedication, alongside Browne’s leadership, there is an opportunity for significant advancements in the regulatory practices that safeguard consumer interests and contribute to a more equitable economic landscape in Fiji.
