Fiji’s New Cancer Initiative: A Lifeline for Patients and Medical Students

The Fiji Cancer Society (FCS) has recently formed a significant partnership with the Umanand Prasad School of Medicine and Health Sciences (UPSMHS) aimed at enhancing cancer awareness and medical support in the country. Belinda Chan, CEO of the FCS, announced that the school will assist in conducting regular screenings and health check-ups at the University of Fiji campuses, while also contributing volunteers for health awareness campaigns.

In light of the need for more trained specialists, particularly given that Fiji currently only has one qualified oncologist, Chan is advocating for the university to encourage its students to pursue specialties in cancer treatment. Dr. Abhijit Gogoi, Acting Dean of UPSMHS, echoed these sentiments, noting that this collaboration would benefit students by providing valuable experience through their participation in cancer-related initiatives.

This partnership is built upon earlier calls from Chan to stimulate interest among medical students in oncology, especially as Fiji faces a rising number of cancer cases. Previous reports highlighted pressing statistics revealing that cancer is the third leading cause of death in the country, with alarming growth in diagnoses over the years.

Both organizations aim to create a more robust framework for cancer care by emphasizing early detection and preventative health measures. As seen in past initiatives, such as health expos and community engagement programs launched by the FCS, increased awareness and educational efforts are crucial in fostering a healthier future for all Fijians.

With the commitment from both the Fiji Cancer Society and UPSMHS, there is optimism that collective efforts can lead to improved health outcomes, increased screening participation, and ultimately, a positive shift in the nation’s approach to cancer care and awareness.
