The University of Fiji has launched a campaign to raise awareness about autism and its impact, encouraging all stakeholders to contribute to understanding, early detection, and respectful treatment of individuals on the autism spectrum. Dr. Abhijit Gogoi, Acting Dean of the Umanand Prasad School of Medicine and Health Sciences, emphasized that Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) manifests differently in each individual, with varying challenges in communication, social interactions, and unique sensory experiences.

The importance of early screening and intervention was highlighted as crucial in helping children develop essential social and communication skills. Dr. Gogoi urged parents, educators, and healthcare professionals to recognize the early signs of autism to seek appropriate support for affected children.

In support of this endeavor, the United Nations General Assembly has designated April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day, a global initiative aimed at promoting understanding and acceptance of autism.

In previous articles, the ongoing efforts to support marginalized individuals, including those with disabilities, underscore the significance of community action and advocacy in fostering inclusivity and reducing stigma. Initiatives like these reflect a growing commitment to inclusion and awareness across different segments of society, emphasizing that everyone deserves respect and the opportunity to thrive.

This push for autism awareness resonates with broader advocacy efforts within Fiji, where there is a collective hope that by promoting awareness and understanding, a positive impact can be made in the lives of individuals and families affected by autism. Building an inclusive society benefits everyone, as it encourages a culture of respect and acceptance.
