Fiji’s New Campaign: Can ‘Bin it or Bag it’ Change Waste Disposal Habits?

Tourism Fiji has introduced the “Bin it or Bag it” campaign aimed at fostering a litter-free environment as part of its sustainable tourism initiatives.

This campaign was born from discussions at the 2023 Fiji Tourism Convention and aims to significantly reduce litter with the support of nearly 15 partners, including notable hotels and resorts, which have contributed over FJ$100,000 in funding and resources.

The initiative encourages both locals and tourists to properly dispose of waste, either in designated bins or in bags for later disposal. The campaign aspires to create a community movement focused on environmental conservation.

Tourism Fiji is partnering with local artists to create a memorable and engaging campaign featuring a catchy jingle and illustrations, including a mascot named ‘Kasikasi’ to advocate for responsible waste disposal. Reusable bags bearing the campaign slogan will also be distributed at various locations around Fiji.

Brent Hill, the Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Fiji, emphasized the shared responsibility in protecting the environment. He stated, “We are thrilled to launch the ‘Bin it or Bag it’ campaign alongside our dedicated partners. This initiative embodies our commitment to sustainable tourism practices and highlights the collective responsibility we share in safeguarding Fiji’s environment. As we roll out this initiative, we encourage all Fijians and visitors to embrace the ethos of ‘Bin it or Bag it.’”

The campaign will be promoted through multiple media channels and aligns with the nation’s sustainability objectives in collaboration with government ministries. Chief Marketing Officer, Srishti Narayan, expressed her enthusiasm for the campaign’s ability to bring together the community, industry, and government efforts in environmental conservation.
