The Fiji Disabled Peoples Federation has expressed significant concerns regarding the accessibility of Fiji’s newly introduced banknotes. According to Office Manager Senimelia Seru, the redesigned currency has posed unforeseen challenges for individuals who are blind or have low vision, contradicting claims that the new notes enhance inclusion and independence.

While the new banknotes feature tactile dots on the top left back corner, Seru pointed out that these elements do not effectively communicate the denomination of the notes, making it difficult for users to identify their money independently. “Our members are still unable to confidently tell notes apart,” she emphasized.

Additionally, Seru mentioned that changes in the paper texture have further complicated independent use of the currency. This inability to reliably verify banknotes presents significant security risks, particularly for those with severe vision impairments. “This lack of independence leaves our members vulnerable to con artists or dishonest individuals,” she stated, highlighting the potential for being cheated when they cannot confirm the value of their money.

The Federation noted that many members now prefer to use the old banknotes, which were more distinguishable by touch. This disappointment is intensified by Fiji’s history of engaging in inclusive consultations during the design of the previous banknote series, which involved collaboration with the United Blind Persons of Fiji and disability advocates to ensure accessibility.

Seru called for the Reserve Bank of Fiji to reconnect with the disability community to address these concerns. She emphasized that financial independence is a fundamental right, stating, “Progress must include everyone.” She urged that Fiji’s development should not be pursued at the expense of the safety and dignity of individuals with disabilities.

This situation presents an opportunity for further dialogue and improvement towards creating a more inclusive environment, ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their abilities, can manage their finances with confidence.
