Parmesh Chand has been appointed as Fiji’s newest ambassador to Japan, a change that is anticipated to further enhance the long-standing relations between the two nations. Dr. Ram Raju, president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI), expressed positive expectations regarding this diplomatic transition. He noted that Fiji and Japan have maintained cordial ties since they established official diplomatic relations in 1970.
Chand, currently the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Civil Service, succeeds Filimoni Waqabaca, who is returning to Fiji to take on the role of chief executive officer at the Fiji Development Bank. Dr. Raju emphasized that this new appointment presents opportunities for increased cooperation across various sectors, including trade, tourism, human resources development, and educational exchanges.
Recognized globally as an economic powerhouse, Japan has been instrumental in supporting Fiji, particularly through scholarships for Fijian students and vital assistance during national disasters via the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Dr. Raju applauded JICA’s significant contributions in providing solutions to flooding crises in Nadi, which have made a positive impact on local communities.
Additionally, Fiji plays a reciprocal role by hosting Japanese students who study English and other subjects. Dr. Raju believes that during his tenure, Chand will effectively promote unique Fijian products—such as spices, pearls, and various agricultural goods—to the discerning Japanese market.
The NCCI plans to invite Chand to meet its members prior to his official duties in Japan, reinforcing the community’s support for this diplomatic transition. Furthermore, Dr. Raju congratulated Waqabaca on his new appointment, expressing confidence in his ability to bolster economic growth at the Fiji Development Bank.
Overall, this appointment marks a hopeful step for Fiji and Japan as both countries seek to deepen their collaboration, which can lead to mutual benefits and shared prosperity. With Chand’s expertise and ongoing goodwill between the nations, there are promising prospects for successful international partnerships that can foster growth in numerous sectors.
