The appointment of Parmesh Chand as Fiji’s new ambassador to Japan is poised to further strengthen the enduring bilateral relations between the two countries, according to Dr. Ram Raju, president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI). Chand, who currently serves as the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Civil Service, will succeed Filimoni Waqabaca, who is set to take up the position of chief executive officer at the Fiji Development Bank.

Dr. Raju noted that Fiji and Japan have enjoyed a cordial relationship since establishing official diplomatic ties in 1970, characterized by substantial cooperation and trade. He expressed hope that Chand’s new role will facilitate enhanced collaboration across various sectors, including trade, tourism, education, and human resources development.

Japan’s economic stature provides Fiji with significant opportunities, and Dr. Raju praised the Japanese government for offering scholarships to Fijian students and providing aid during national disasters, primarily through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). JICA’s involvement has notably been critical in addressing flooding issues in Nadi, as it has offered valuable solutions and support during emergencies.

Moreover, Fiji actively engages in educational exchanges by hosting Japanese students who study English and other subjects. Dr. Raju believes that during his tenure, Chand will effectively promote Fijian products such as spices, pearls, and agricultural goods in the discerning Japanese market.

In a display of community support, the NCCI intends to invite Chand to meet its members before he begins his role in Japan. Dr. Raju also congratulated Waqabaca on his new position, expressing his belief that Waqabaca’s leadership will bolster the economic development of Fiji.

The future looks promising with this appointment, as both nations aim to deepen their collaboration, leading to mutual benefits and shared prosperity. The optimistic outlook reflects Fiji’s commitment to enhancing its global relations, fostering hope for continued growth in its international partnerships.
