Parmesh Chand has been appointed as Fiji’s newest ambassador to Japan, a move that is anticipated to further solidify the longstanding diplomatic relationship between the two nations. Dr. Ram Raju, president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI), expressed positive expectations regarding this critical transition, noting that Fiji and Japan have maintained cordial ties since the establishment of official relations in 1970.
Chand currently serves as the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Civil Service and will succeed Filimoni Waqabaca, who is returning to Fiji to take the helm at the Fiji Development Bank (FDB). Dr. Raju emphasized that Chand’s role could lead to increased collaboration in sectors such as trade, tourism, human resources development, and humanitarian aid.
The economic stature of Japan offers significant opportunities for Fiji, and Dr. Raju acknowledged Japan’s steadfast support in the form of scholarships for Fijian students and valuable assistance during national disasters through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). JICA’s contributions have been particularly noteworthy in addressing issues related to flooding disasters in Nadi, providing expert solutions that have positively impacted local communities.
In addition to the potential benefits for Fiji, the country also hosts Japanese students who study English and other subjects, fostering educational exchanges. Dr. Raju is confident that during his tenure, Chand will actively promote Fijian products such as spices, pearls, noni products, and various agricultural goods to the meticulous Japanese market.
The NCCI is planning to invite Chand to meet its members prior to his departure, reinforcing the strong community support for this new chapter in Fiji’s diplomatic relations. Furthermore, Dr. Raju congratulated Waqabaca on his new leadership role at FDB, expressing optimism that his experience will contribute to Fiji’s economic growth.
This ambassadorial appointment heralds a promising future for both Fiji and Japan, aiming for enhanced cooperation and shared benefits in various fields. With Chand’s expertise and the ongoing goodwill between the two nations, the potential for growth and collaboration appears bright, fostering a positive and fruitful relationship that can result in mutual prosperity.
