The appointment of Parmesh Chand as Fiji’s new ambassador to Japan is anticipated to significantly fortify the enduring ties between the two nations, according to Dr. Ram Raju, president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI). Mr. Chand, who is currently the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Civil Service, will succeed Ambassador Filimoni Waqabaca, who is set to return to Fiji and lead the Fiji Development Bank.
Dr. Raju remarked that Fiji and Japan have maintained a warm relationship since establishing official diplomatic relations in 1970, characterized by substantial trade and collaboration across various sectors. He expressed optimism that Chand’s new role will pave the way for enhanced cooperation in areas including trade, tourism, and human resources development.
Highlighting Japan’s significant position as an economic powerhouse, Dr. Raju acknowledged its ongoing contributions to Fiji, particularly through scholarships offered to Fijian students and vital assistance during national disasters via the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). He noted JICA’s critical role in supporting the recovery efforts from flooding disasters in Nadi, showcasing a partnership that benefits both nations.
Dr. Raju emphasized that Fiji also provides valuable educational opportunities for Japanese students wishing to study English and other subjects within the country, further strengthening the bilateral relationship. He is confident that during his tenure, Mr. Chand will effectively promote Fijian niche products, such as spices, pearls, and agricultural goods, in the discerning Japanese market.
In a friendly gesture, the NCCI is planning to invite Mr. Chand to meet its members before he officially begins his new role, highlighting the community’s support for this diplomatic transition. Additionally, Dr. Raju took a moment to congratulate Mr. Waqabaca on his new role, expressing confidence in his capabilities to foster economic growth at the Fiji Development Bank.
This diplomatic appointment is viewed as a promising step forward for Fiji and Japan, as both nations seek to deepen their collaboration and derive mutual benefits. The outlook remains hopeful as these countries continue to enhance their international relations, potentially leading to more extensive cooperation and shared prosperity in the future.
