Fiji’s New Ambassador to Japan: A Bridge to Enhanced Bilateral Ties

The recent appointment of Parmesh Chand as Fiji’s new ambassador to Japan is expected to enhance the longstanding bilateral relations between the two nations. Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) president Dr. Ram Raju expressed optimism regarding this transition, emphasizing the established cordial ties since the official diplomatic relationship began in 1970.

Chand, who is currently serving as the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Civil Service, takes over from Filimoni Waqabaca, who is set to return to Fiji to lead the Fiji Development Bank. Dr. Raju noted that Chand’s new position could pave the way for increased cooperation across various sectors, including trade, tourism, and human resources development.

Dr. Raju highlighted Japan’s role as an economic powerhouse, commending the nation for its support through scholarships for Fijian students and assistance during national disasters, particularly via the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This agency has played a critical role in emergency responses, especially during flooding disasters in Nadi, providing valuable solutions and support.

In addition, Fiji is committed to providing educational opportunities for Japanese students studying English and other subjects within the country. Dr. Raju expressed confidence that during his tenure, Chand would actively promote Fijian niche products—such as spices, pearls, and various agricultural goods—within the discerning Japanese market.

As a show of goodwill and support, the NCCI intends to invite Chand to meet with its members before he embarks on his new role. Dr. Raju also congratulated Waqabaca on his new position and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the Fiji Development Bank towards greater economic prospects.

This significant diplomatic transition holds promising potential for Fiji and Japan, as both countries look to strengthen their partnership further, fostering collaborative opportunities that can lead to mutual benefits and growth for their peoples. The outlook is hopeful as Fiji continues to enhance its international relations and solidify its global presence.
