In an effort to rebuild public confidence in the Fiji Police Force and the broader justice system, the Fiji Police have partnered with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. This collaboration aims to enhance national safety and strengthen community-police relations, ensuring that citizens feel protected and supported.
As part of this strategic alliance, both forces are focused on deterring criminal activities, improving response times, and fostering stronger connections with local communities. Senior Superintendent of Police Kasiano Vusonilawe, who serves as the Police Director of Operations, highlighted the importance of having a strong, visible presence in communities to help restore trust in law enforcement. He noted, “To win the hearts and minds of the people and restore their trust in the police, we seek assistance from them to help us increase our security presence on the ground.”
Moreover, this collaboration comes at a critical juncture as military support is also instrumental in the planned destruction of over four tonnes of methamphetamine seized during recent drug raids. Vusonilawe emphasizes that the joint operation will ensure the effective illegal substance elimination, showcasing the commitment of both forces to public safety.
This partnership reflects a broader strategy discussed in recent meetings, where leaders from both the police and military, including Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the RFMF, and Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu, explored initiatives targeting drug-related crimes and their underlying social challenges. They recognized that Fiji’s drug issues are often connected to socio-economic factors such as poverty and limited access to education and healthcare.
As Fiji moves ahead with this unified approach, there is a hopeful outlook that it will not only focus on immediate law enforcement responses but will also engage communities in developing sustainable strategies to combat drug abuse. Continued collaboration and community involvement are crucial in creating a safer and healthier environment for all Fijians, reinforcing a commitment to long-term solutions to these pressing challenges.
