Fiji’s New Airport Initiative Aims to Ease Student Travel Hurdles

Fijians with outstanding debts to the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS) will now face reminders regarding their clearance requirements at Nadi Airport before departing the country. Digital screens will display notifications in the Departure Check-In area and prior to entering the security zone to ensure that travelers have obtained the necessary clearances.

Additionally, returning bonded graduates and sponsored students will have access to kiosks in the arrival concourse, where they can promptly delist their guarantors, thereby addressing a common issue that has previously led to confusion and delays at the airport.

This initiative, which follows a recent agreement between TSLS and Fiji Airports, aims to simplify the process for students and enhance their travel experience. Mesake Nawari, the CEO of Fiji Airports, noted the significance of making services more accessible.

TSLS CEO Dr. Hasmukh Lal emphasized the importance of compliance, stating that any traveler who does not secure proper clearance, despite multiple reminders, will have to face the consequences themselves. He further explained the purpose of the kiosks, which will facilitate the delisting of guarantors upon re-entry into the country.

This development comes on the heels of ongoing challenges faced by TSLS in ensuring that students comply with travel clearance protocols, as indicated by previous reports that highlighted an average of 150 students being offloaded from flights each month due to these issues. The combination of increased awareness efforts and this streamlined approach through kiosks is expected to foster a more informed student body that adheres to the necessary requirements.
