The Fijian government is currently conducting a feasibility study for the proposed development of a new airport in the Yasawas, as announced by Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, during a parliamentary budget debate. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader commitment to expanding air connectivity to less-served regions within Fiji.

Gavoka pointed out that the new airport could significantly boost tourism, improve access for local communities, and contribute to the country’s overall development. He also highlighted the concurrent development of Fiji’s first-ever Civil Aviation Master Plan, a strategic roadmap designed to guide aviation infrastructure and services over time.

This plan represents a significant investment in the aviation sector, aiming to enhance safety, security, and regulatory frameworks in accordance with international best practices. Gavoka mentioned that a comprehensive review of the Civil Aviation Act from 1976 is also underway, with completion aimed for the upcoming financial year. This review seeks to align Fiji’s aviation laws with global standards and bolster both domestic and international air services.

The government’s efforts come on the heels of ongoing improvements in Fiji’s aviation infrastructure, such as the development of new terminals at Labasa and Savusavu airports, which aim to modernize and uplift these critical travel hubs. These initiatives demonstrate a dedicated approach to not only enhancing connectivity but also fostering inclusive growth in tourism across all provinces.

Overall, the proposed developments in Fiji’s aviation sector signal a promising future for both the economy and tourism industry, marking a commitment to sustainable growth and improved connectivity for local communities and visitors alike. Such strategic planning is essential for positioning Fiji as an attractive destination in the competitive global tourism market, ultimately supporting the country’s economic recovery and development efforts.
