Fiji men’s netball player Rarawa Vulimainarita has achieved a remarkable milestone, not only by making his international debut but also by taking his first-ever flight. The 27-year-old played a pivotal role in helping the Fiji men’s team secure a historic victory against Australia, triumphing 55-54 in the final of the Men’s Netball Nations Series held in Singapore.
Hailing from Vulaga in Lau and raised in the maternal village of Laselase in Sigatoka, Vulimainarita was welcomed back as a hero by his family and friends after the tournament. Reflecting on his extraordinary experience, he credited his success to divine intervention for both making the team and winning the series, which marked a significant achievement for Netball Fiji.
He humorously recalled his reaction during his first flight, describing how he kept his head down during takeoff. His teammates couldn’t help but laugh at his nervousness. “I mean I travel by bus, taxi, and van daily, so this was totally new to me,” Vulimainarita shared. Despite facing challenges during his preparation, including juggling work at Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort and trying to fit in training sessions, Vulimainarita persevered.
