After thirteen years of dedicated local netball play, Joseva Nawaqa has made his international debut for Fiji at the Men’s Netball Nations Series held earlier this month. Nawaqa, who has worn many hats as a player, coach, and official in the sport, has a distinctive presence on the court characterized by his unique style of play. His journey into netball began as a Form Five student at Ratu Navula College, where he first represented Nadi in competitions back in 2011.
Nawaqa attributed his passion for netball to his aunt, with whom he spent time learning the game. After starting his competitive journey in Nadi, he later moved to Suva to pursue his education at the University of the South Pacific (USP). During his time there, he continued to represent different teams, eventually joining Tiki club as both a player and a coach.
Despite Nawaqa’s family providing strong support, he faced challenges from his community, which often viewed netball as a sport only for women. He expressed that increasing awareness about the sport’s inclusivity was vital, emphasizing that netball is for everyone. While training for the Nations Series, Nawaqa and his teammates encountered negativity and criticism, which they were advised to mentally prepare for. They focused on personal growth and constructive feedback, which aided their performance in Singapore.
Nawaqa’s experience with the Fiji Men’s Netball team had been previously limited to local competitions, but their participation in the Nations Series proved transformative. The team made history by defeating Australia 55-54 in a nail-biting final, marking a significant achievement for Fiji in men’s netball. Reflecting on the experience, Nawaqa expressed gratitude for representing his country and noted how the win brought a new level of recognition and support from the nation.
Although he faced a nose injury during the final, Nawaqa’s determination shone through as he stepped onto the court and contributed to the thrilling victory. His emotional reaction during the celebrations illustrated the bond between him and his teammates, highlighting the essence of teamwork in their success.
Looking ahead, Nawaqa is committed to furthering his involvement in netball, with aspirations to expand his coaching career. His story serves as an inspiration to many, showing that dedication and resilience can lead to remarkable achievements in sports.
This turning point not only elevates the profile of men’s netball in Fiji but also signifies a shift in societal perceptions toward inclusivity in sports, paving the way for future athletes.
