Fiji’s net international investment position reached -$15,471.4 million in the September quarter of 2025, showing a slight decline from -$15,031.8 million in the same period the previous year. This represents an increase of $439.6 million when compared to the September quarter of 2024, indicating a nuanced shift in the country’s investment landscape. Kemueli Naiqama, the chief executive officer of the Fiji Bureau of Statistics, noted that the figures reflect a significant rise in foreign investments in Fiji, outpacing the investments made by the country itself.

The report also highlighted Fiji’s international liabilities, which totaled $22,923.0 million as of September 30, 2025, marking a 0.9 percent growth from the previous quarter. This growth is attributed to an increase in direct investments and other forms of investment in the country. Analyzing the composition of these liabilities, equity and other investments accounted for 58.6 percent, while loans comprised 23.9 percent, and other payable accounts made up 9.6 percent. Additionally, currency and deposits represented 4.4 percent, special drawing rights 2.2 percent, and debt securities 1.3 percent.

On the asset side, Fiji’s total international assets, which encompass financial claims on non-residents and monetary gold reserves, were valued at $7,451.6 million as of September 30, an increase of 1.8 percent from the previous quarter. This rise in assets was fueled primarily by an uptick in reserve assets and portfolio investments. A closer look at the assets reveals that 61.8 percent consisted of currency and deposits, with equity and other financial instruments making up 18.9 percent, followed by debt securities at 7.0 percent.

Overall, these figures portray a growing trend in foreign investments within Fiji, reflecting a potential for economic opportunity. The insights from the Bureau underscore the importance of fostering positive investment climates to bolster the country’s financial stability and growth moving forward.
