Fijian Nazhat Shameem Khan has ascended to the prominent role of Acting Chief Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court (ICC). This development comes as the ICC’s Office of the Prosecutor announced that along with Khan, fellow deputy prosecutor Mame Mandiaye Niang will be taking charge during the temporary absence of Prosecutor Karim AA Khan KC, who stepped aside while a United Nations Office of Internal Oversight Services investigation into alleged misconduct is underway.

Nazhat Khan, who previously held the position of Fiji’s ambassador to the United Nations, began her tenure at the ICC in 2021. She will lead the office of the Prosecutor while maintaining the support of the Rome Statute community and all its partners in pursuing desired legal outcomes.

This transition in leadership is reminiscent of other recent changes within Fiji’s legal system, including the appointment of Lisiate Fotofili as Acting Deputy Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Fotofili’s experience as a prosecutor and magistrate has been highlighted as a vital asset during times when governance integrity is being scrutinized.

Such leadership transformations across Fiji’s legal framework signal a moves toward reinforcing accountability and transparency within institutions that directly affect public trust and governance efficacy. With professionals like Khan and Fotofili at the helm, there is hope for a more robust legal stance against misconduct and corruption, ultimately fostering a commitment toward ethical governance and the rule of law in both domestic and international contexts.
