Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has not yet received a briefing regarding the damages suffered by the Republic of Fiji Navy Squadron’s (RFNS) Timo, a replacement for the decommissioned RFNS Puamau. The $18 million RFNS Puamau ran aground in the waters of Fulaga in June while being transported back to Fiji from Australia by sailors of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Naval Division.

Although Prime Minister Rabuka expressed awareness of the incident, he stated, “I have not been given the report under the minister responsible for the Navy.” He acknowledged that the incident could have stemmed from either an accident or negligence and indicated that these details would emerge following an initial investigation.

Commodore Humphrey Tawake, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy, attributed the grounding incident to a combination of adverse weather conditions, limited docking space, and interference from nearby commercial vessels. Additionally, he mentioned that there is a possibility of inappropriate behavior among some crew members, as reports suggest that some were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

This situation highlights the need for diligent protocols within the Navy to ensure the safety and accountability of its operations. The investigation may serve as a crucial opportunity for the Navy to improve procedures and enhance training for naval personnel. Ultimately, ensuring the well-being of the crew and the integrity of the vessels remains paramount for the Republic of Fiji Navy.

In a hopeful and positive light, this challenging incident could lead to significant improvements in operational safety protocols and crew training, fostering a culture of responsibility and vigilance within the naval force. The findings from the investigation could pave the way for increased awareness and proactive measures in similar future endeavors.
