The Republic of Fiji Military Forces Naval Division is making significant strides in maritime security with the recent commissioning of the RFNS Timo, a state-of-the-art Guardian-class patrol boat. This latest addition marks the third vessel of this class in Fiji’s navy, further enhancing the country’s capability to safeguard its extensive waters and vital natural resources.

At a ceremony celebrating the RFNS Timo’s arrival, Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs, Professor Biman Prasad, underscored the vessel’s important role in protecting trade routes and promoting the sustainable use of marine resources. The commissioning comes in light of increasing drug trafficking incidents, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced maritime security measures.

Prasad emphasized that “the RFNS Timo will significantly bolster the Fiji Navy’s operations,” working in conjunction with the Maritime Essential Services Centre and the C-27 Spartan Aircraft to improve disaster response and naval rescue efforts.

Replacing the decommissioned RFNS Puamau, the RFNS Timo is also a testament to the strengthening ties between Fiji and Australia, who generously donated the vessel. This collaboration signifies a mutual commitment to regional security and partnership.

The arrival of the RFNS Timo represents not just a military upgrade, but a hopeful symbol of enhanced safety and cooperation across the Pacific. Fiji’s proactive approach to defending its maritime territory supports not only national security but also ensures the health and sustainability of regional marine resources.

With the RFNS Timo at the forefront, Fiji is poised for a more secure maritime future, reinforcing its dedication to protecting its waters and fostering collaborative relationships in the Pacific region. This advancement illustrates a strong commitment to both national interests and regional stability.
