Fiji is set to host its 63rd National Sanatan Convention from April 18-21 in Lautoka, which marks a significant moment in its sporting history. This year’s event will introduce a pioneering drug-testing initiative during its competitive sports activities, aimed at promoting fair play and athlete well-being.
The four-day celebration, organized by the Sanatan Dharam Prathinidi Sabha of Fiji, Sports Wing, will feature a diverse array of sports including soccer, netball, golf, volleyball, and snooker, with soccer taking center stage. A total of 30 teams will compete in the open grade soccer category, while 10 teams will participate in the Masters grade, alongside 13 netball teams in the Open grade and eight in the Masters grade.
This emphasis on integrity comes at a crucial time as Fiji is addressing broader concerns regarding drug use in sports, which have been highlighted in various initiatives and reports focusing on the importance of drug-free sporting environments. The recent increase in drug-testing discussions, such as those from the Fiji Football Association and the push for local drug testing labs, reflects a commitment to tackle these issues head-on.
Sanjay Ram, president of Sanatan Fiji Sports, expressed the essence of the event by stating, “This tournament is more than just competition, it’s a reunion for our community.” The introduction of drug testing, supported by local doctors and police officers, is a step towards ensuring a safe and clean competition.
Cultural festivities will begin a day earlier, on April 17, at the Girmit Centre, enhancing the festival-like atmosphere expected throughout the event with food stalls and entertainment. Participants and supporters from across Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand will congregate for what promises to be a joyous celebration of sports and cultural heritage.
This initiative not only reinforces the importance of a healthy lifestyle but also aims to inspire future generations about the values of sportsmanship and community integrity.
