Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, engaged with Pio Smith, the Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), during a High-Level Regional Consultation on Financing for Development in Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok.

In their discussion, DPM Prasad expressed gratitude to the UNFPA for its instrumental role in drafting Fiji’s first National Population Policy. This policy is designed to tackle demographic shifts and ensure that population trends align with the nation’s development objectives. The implementation of this policy is anticipated to significantly influence Fiji’s future development and growth.

Additionally, the UNFPA is eager for Fiji’s involvement in the upcoming 58th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) scheduled for April 2025.

This meeting signifies Fiji’s commitment to leveraging international partnerships and expertise in addressing population issues, which will ultimately contribute to sustainable development in the region. The positive collaboration between Fiji and UNFPA indicates a proactive approach to managing national demographic challenges while striving for inclusive growth.

Overall, the efforts made to establish a comprehensive population policy reflect a forward-thinking strategy that can not only benefit Fiji but also serve as a model for other nations facing similar demographic challenges.
