Fiji’s National Population Policy: A Catalyst for Growth?

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, recently engaged in discussions with Pio Smith, the Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), during the High-Level Regional Consultation on Financing for Development in Asia and the Pacific, taking place in Bangkok.

In their meeting, DPM Prasad expressed gratitude towards UNFPA for its instrumental role in assisting Fiji to establish its inaugural National Population Policy. This policy aims to address demographic changes and align population trends with the national development objectives of Fiji, signaling a proactive approach to managing growth and sustainability in the country.

The implementation of this policy is anticipated to be crucial in guiding Fiji toward its future development goals. Furthermore, UNFPA is optimistic about Fiji’s upcoming participation in the 58th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) scheduled for April 2025, indicating a commitment to continued collaboration and dialogue on population and development issues.
