Fiji’s National Identity: A Call for Reconciliation

Fiji’s National Security and Defence Review (NSDR) Taskforce has called on the Prime Minister to formally seek the approval of the Great Council of Chiefs for the use of the term “Fijian” as the nationality designation for all citizens of Fiji.

During the launch of the report, Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua expressed that this initiative marks a positive beginning and he plans to move forward with it.

The report indicates that some stakeholders believe that adopting “Fijian” as a national label can unify the populace, thereby enhancing social cohesion.

It also notes that referring this matter to the Great Council of Chiefs, who are regarded as the guardians of indigenous Fijian identity, represents a step toward reconciliation.

The recommendation allows the Great Council of Chiefs the opportunity to assess the issue and, akin to their ancestors who signed the Deed of Cession on October 10, 1874, to establish a meaningful legacy that reflects their commitment to the nation’s welfare.

The report emphasizes that such an act of reconciliation would significantly enhance social unity.
