Fiji’s National ID Initiative: Unlocking Opportunities for Citizens

A workshop focused on Fiji’s National ID Programme, which is a key element of the government’s digital economy initiatives, commenced in Suva last week. This collaboration between the Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF), the Fiji Government, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) aims to establish an identification system for both government and private sector use.

Shaheen Ali, the permanent secretary for Trade, highlighted the government’s dedication to the project, highlighting its goal to create an effective eKYC (Electronic Know Your Customer) process. This initiative is intended to empower citizens and enhance financial inclusion. “Our aim is to develop a secure and scalable national database that facilitates accurate and inclusive identification processes,” he stated.

Aaron Batten, ADB’s regional director for the Pacific Subregional Office, pointed out that the National Digital ID and e-KYC align with ADB’s Fiji country partnership strategy for 2024-2028. This initiative is aimed at advancing sustainable and efficient public services while building a resilient and inclusive financial system.

RBF governor Ariff Ali underscored the significance of a National Digital ID system in today’s interconnected world. He described the National ID as a key that unlocks access to government services. “It is fundamental to citizenship, allowing Fijians to efficiently access essential services like healthcare, education, and banking,” he explained. “We are confident that a strong National Digital ID system will empower citizens by improving access to vital services and promoting economic growth.”

The project is anticipated to take at least 36 months to complete, with a steering committee led by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica, alongside Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad and Governor Ali, established to oversee its progress.
