The National Fire Authority (NFA) has made significant strides in emergency healthcare with the recent launch of its inaugural emergency pre-hospital ambulance. The launching ceremony, led by Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, underscores a substantial government commitment, as an additional $2.1 million has been earmarked for ambulance services in the upcoming 2024-2025 fiscal year.
Minister Nalumisa emphasized the advancements made since the inception of the National Ambulance Service Act in 2010, which established the groundwork for the services currently offered by the NFA. He noted that in the past five financial years, ambulance-related calls represented 26 percent of all calls received by the NFA, second only to private fire alarm notifications.
From the beginning of this year, the NFA has responded to 170 fire emergencies and 152 road accidents, highlighting the critical role of ambulance services in community safety. The government has shown continued support for the NFA, contributing a total of $6.1 million for its operational needs, which has enabled the procurement of two new ambulances in the previous fiscal year.
Looking ahead, the Authority plans to utilize budget allocations to acquire more ambulances, ensuring comprehensive emergency services across Fiji. Minister Nalumisa affirmed the government’s dedication to equipping personnel with proper training and tools to deliver prompt healthcare across the islands.
In summary, the establishment of the NFA’s first ambulance marks a pivotal moment in enhancing emergency medical services in Fiji. With the government’s ongoing financial investment, communities can look forward to improved access to timely emergency healthcare, which is a hopeful development for public health and safety in the region.
