At the recent National Farmers Awards in Nadi, Sashi Kiran, Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, delivered a passionate keynote speech celebrating the resilience and innovation of Fijian farmers. She urged a collective effort toward enhancing nutrition, inclusive development, and agricultural innovation to tackle pressing issues such as food security and malnutrition in Fiji.
Kiran commended the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways for their exemplary work in organizing the Agriculture Show, which serves as a valuable platform for farmers to learn, innovate, network, and be recognized for their contributions. She emphasized the vital role that homegrown food plays, not only in reducing household food costs but also in combating public health challenges. Addressing the alarming malnutrition rates affecting 80% of children under two and 50% of school-aged children, Kiran advocated for a return to traditional agricultural practices, highlighting the benefits of local crops like saijan, bele, and rourou.
Further commendations were extended towards the Ministry of Agriculture for initiatives like the Non-Sugar Agriculture Crop Policy and the integration of gender considerations into agricultural programs. Kiran reiterated her ministry’s dedication to the Fiji Women’s Economic Empowerment National Action Plan (WEE NAP) 2025–2030, aiming to boost women’s participation in commercial agriculture by improving their access to tools, technology, and markets.
This event underscored the indispensable role of farmers in ensuring food security and shaping Fiji’s agricultural future. The emphasis on traditional crops, women’s empowerment, and sustainable practices reflects a broader strategy aimed at reducing Fiji’s reliance on imports, enhancing domestic food security, and ultimately leading to healthier populations and a more resilient economy. Through these efforts, Fiji is taking concrete steps toward a sustainable agricultural system that harnesses local resources and strengthens community resilience, offering hope for a robust future.
