Fiji’s National Development Plan: A Game Changer for Business Owners?

The National Development Plan (NDP) aims to provide clarity to business owners, families, and other stakeholders contributing to Fiji’s economy, according to Paulo Ralulu, managing director of Pacific Operations. Ralulu emphasized that the NDP will outline the requirements for establishing a business, necessary compliance measures, and ensure transparency in tax regulations.

He explained that the focus from a private sector perspective starts with understanding the overall costs associated with running a business. Following this, it is essential to identify the right personnel to manage operations, before finally considering the business environment itself.

Ralulu highlighted that the NDP will serve as a framework and policy guide, clarifying the prerequisites for businesses and the compliance required. He stressed the importance of transparency in tax matters, indicating that businesses should have a clear understanding of their tax obligations, which allows for strategic investments in other areas to offset those costs.

He further noted that the NDP addresses all these critical issues. Ralulu acknowledged the government’s role in ensuring educational institutions operate effectively, pointing out efforts such as free education aimed at keeping children in school and encouraging them to pursue higher education. This, he believes, will help foster an environment where young individuals can either join existing businesses or launch their own.

Overall, Ralulu views the NDP as a significant step forward for improving the business landscape in Fiji.
